Wear It Green Weekend Returns: A Call to the Cricket Community

News

Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th June

This June, cricket clubs across Norfolk and beyond will once again come together for Wear It Green Weekend — a simple but powerful show of solidarity that raises awareness of, and support for, men’s mental health.

What started as a small idea has grown into something far bigger than we imagined. Last year, the response was remarkable. More than 500 pairs of Wear It Green socks made their way to players and clubs across Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, and even as far as Devon and Adelaide. Every pair worn helped spark conversations that mattered.

Clubs and leagues also turned their social media feeds green across the weekend. That collective show of support wasn’t just uplifting — it was a reminder of what cricket can achieve when it stands together.

But the reality remains stark. The need for this work has not gone away.

In 2024, more than 4,500 men died by suicide in England and Wales — the equivalent of around 400 cricket teams, or one man every 90 minutes. These are not numbers on a page; they are teammates, friends, fathers, sons and brothers. They are people who should still be here.

Cricket clubs have long been places where men find belonging, routine and connection. Recent events within the game, including the passing of Graham Thorpe, underline just how vital those spaces are — and how important it is that we keep talking, keep checking in, and keep showing up for one another.

Our work with the Norfolk Cricket Foundation continues to help us reach more clubs, more players and more communities across the county. But awareness only grows when people take part — and that’s where you come in.

How You Can Support the Weekend

Whether you’re a player, supporter, umpire, scorer, coach or volunteer, your involvement genuinely makes a difference.

  • Wear something green on matchday — socks, armbands, caps, laces, anything.
  • Encourage your club to get involved and share the message.
  • Turn your social media green and help spread awareness.
  • Start a conversation — with a teammate, a friend, or someone who might need it.

Small gestures can have a big impact. A pair of socks can start a conversation. A green post can reach someone who needs to see it. A moment of openness can change the direction of someone’s day — or their life.

This June, let’s show what cricket can do.

Let’s fill grounds, clubhouses and timelines with green and let’s stand together for the men who are struggling, the men who feel alone, and the men who need to know that support is there.

Wear it. Share it. Talk about it — because every conversation counts.
